The safety concept
Despite the best safety technology, as with all technical products, there can never be 100% protection. Thin, soft obstacles (such as the tip of a dog's tail) may not be detected by the sensors. Your petWALK pet door features the following sophisticated safety features:
Double door leaf locking
- With firmware 5.1, the door leaf automatically opens a few centimeters before locking, then closes again and only locks after the second closing. This automatic opening automatically releases a trapped object (e.g., a tail tip) and prevents it from remaining trapped.
Warning tone
- During the closing process, the petWALK pet door emits a continuous warning tone. Do not turn this warning tone off completely so your pet is alerted to the closing process.
Motion monitoring
- Using two sensitive motion sensors (in the door frame above the door leaf and on the underside of the door leaf), the petWALK pet door detects movement and only closes when no more movement is detected within a defined period of time.
You can test this yourself by moving your hand within the door's pivoting range while the door is open. Either the exit control or entry control symbol should flash orange repeatedly, but the door should not close. However, as soon as you hold your hand still for the set time so that no symbol lights up, the door will attempt to close.
If the animal remains motionless in the doorway, the door leaf may still start to close because the sensors could no longer detect any movement.
Electronic anti-pinch protection (“motor current monitoring”)
- Even slight resistance when closing or opening the door causes it to stop and move slightly in the opposite direction. After a while, the door attempts to close, this time with a little more force. After several unsuccessful attempts, the door goes into alarm mode to indicate a problem.
You can easily test this behavior yourself by placing an object still within the swing range, allowing the door leaf to move against it. After four attempts, the door will display the error message "E02."
If, when you try, the door leaf does not stop immediately and move in the opposite direction, but instead exerts a very light, continuous pressure and only reports the error message “E03” after a few seconds, then the mechanical safety device (“slip clutch”) is set too loosely and needs to be tightened.
Mechanical anti-pinch protection (“slip clutch”)
- The drive motor is connected to the door leaf via a mechanical clutch, which automatically interrupts the power transmission when a set resistance is reached.
Due to design constraints, the set force may decrease over time and due to wear on the clutch linings. In the worst case, this could result in the electronic anti-pinch protection no longer working because the door leaf is stopped by the slip clutch at lower force. Check the correct setting regularly and adjust it regularly or as needed.
Constructive anti-pinch protection
- To move the door leaf as smoothly as possible while still securely locking it, your petWALK pet door features two separate drives. The door drive receives only as much power as it absolutely needs for movement, and the locking motor can only be activated when an electrical contact is closed and the gap on the side facing away from the axis is less than 8 mm. This is ensured by a small wedge on the top of the door leaf and a bolt on the locking mechanism. The bolt can only close the door leaf if the gap on the side facing away from the axis is within a safe range; otherwise,
